Lucid

Today when I place on my tongue
the first fresh raspberry,
I remember my mother loved
their delicate explosion in her mouth.
I feel her come close
to revel in the sweet red taste.

This is the moment
when anything can change.
Everything is happening
now. I am lucid
in the dream of life.

The thunder hasn’t come
since October
and the rains aren’t due till June,
so today when the sky darkens,
I rush outside in glee
at the splendid surprise.

This is the moment
when anything can change.
Everything is happening
now. I am lucid
in the dream of life.

I watch the woodpecker
drill his perfect circle
high in the coconut palm
Suddenly the whole of him
slides over the threshold,
vanishes into the black hole.

This is the moment
when anything can change.
Everything is happening
now. I am lucid
in the dream of life.

I sense the compassionate eyes
of the One who is writing
the poem of my life;
a gaze of abiding acceptance.
She whispers, Everything is once.
Everything is now.

  • A wonderful, transformative poem! I love the “verse and refrain” form, seeing things anew, and yet returning to that truth.

taste of a Raspberry …. leaves on the briers … I look forward to the ‘taste in my mouth’, like on my ‘mother’s tongue’ … a harvest from childhood….
    blessed with rain today
nourishing me and the plants coming back, with change…HERe……NOW*
    Thank you Susa! 😃
