Un Día Mas

Un día mas,
I say to my neighbor, Iréne.
She stands outside her tienda,
sweeping the sidewalk
in the predawn dark,
her nightclothes covered by an apron.

One day more before I move,
is what I mean.
But she answers,
so quietly I must lean toward her,
Yes, one more,
a day from heaven we’re given.

Doña Iréne’s words
percolate through my body.
Walking on, I come present
to receive
this one more gift of a day
for marveling at the miracle.
